- Dog behavior problems are a common reason why people decide to abandon their dogs.
- Current law prohibits owners from abandoning or abandoning animals beyond their care.
- Abandoning dogs not only harms the dogs, but also destroys society by causing social problems
he stray dog problem is still a chronic social problem in Thailand, which no matter how many eras have passed, it still cannot be solved.
Our country has millions of stray dogs scattered in various areas of the country, whether it be temples, schools, government offices, public parks,
and on the streets. These stray dogs were actually dogs that had owners before. Some were abandoned, some were separated from their owners,
and some were neglected until they became community dogs. Some dogs were born from street dogs, which may have mated with house dogs,
but no one would accept them as their owners. When they were born on the streets, they had to continue living on the streets by default.
The negative impacts of stray dogs have an effect on humans and the environment in society, whether it be the noise of barking, animal waste,
accidents, and diseases transmitted from animals to humans. Asking who causes these problems, the answer is without a doubt “humans”.
It is they who raise animals irresponsibly and pass the burden on to society. The following are the reasons why people decide to abandon dogs.
Personal issues of the breeder
This problem occurs when the owner thinks that continuing to raise a dog may affect the owner’s own life or the lives of family members,
whether it is having a family member with allergies or being unable to live with animals anymore, such as parents not allowing the owner to raise a dog,
breaking up with a boyfriend, condo not allowing the owner to raise a dog, the place to move to is not suitable for raising a pet,
unable to take the pet to live due to problems with regulations. These animals, if lucky, may end up finding a new home.
But if they cannot find a home and the situation forces them, they may end up being abandoned at a temple or on the side of the road as usual.
Animal behavioral issues
This problem is considered the main problem that people decide to abandon their dogs, especially dogs with aggressive behavior
, chasing and biting family members, not getting along with family members at all, having an unfriendly personality and being violent towards others.
Some dogs do not have aggressive behavior but have a habit of barking and howling loudly all the time, which is a nuisance to family members and neighbors.
Or some houses may have patients living in them, which disturbs their rest. Some dogs have a problem of not defecating in the right place, but the owners cannot handle it.
If we look deeper into the behavioral problems of these dogs, it is caused by the owners themselves who lack attention to training the dogs to learn the correct behaviors,
letting it go until it becomes a problem, and finally they cannot live together.
Animal health issues
Some dogs suffer from chronic diseases that require long-term care, or some dogs suffer from diseases that cannot be cured,
such as cancer or diseases that make the animal disabled and unable to help itself. Some cannot control their bowel movements, cannot move
, or have any other diseases that may make the dog no longer cute. Some cannot accept that their dog is sick, and the cost of treatment for dogs is too high
. When there are too many of them and they affect the owner’s income, it is not worth raising them anymore. Or they may not have enough time to take care of sick animals because they have to earn a living.
That is why owners decide to abandon their animals. Some dogs are abandoned in animal hospitals where their owners bring them for treatment. Worse still, they do not continue to treat the dogs and let them slowly die in agony
Even though we now have the Prevention of Cruelty and Animal Welfare Act of 2014, which clearly states that “Animal owners are prohibited from abandoning, abandoning,
or doing anything to release animals from their care without reasonable cause,” 3-4 years have passed and we still see people defying the law and not following it.
People may not be afraid because the punishments are mild and the enforcement is not strict, so they do not learn from it and tend to break the law whenever they have the chance.
We cannot blame the law alone because it is only a side effect. How can we make everyone aware and have a sense of responsibility that “Abandoning a dog does not only harm the dog,
but also destroys society?” I would like to leave you with this thought… Before we leave, let’s watch a clip of abandoned dogs. Let’s see how those dogs feel.
